Q &A for Pinewood Derby

Q: What is Pinewood Derby Registration?
A: Registration occurs on the evening before the race. At Registration all cars will be weighed, measured and tested to see if all wheels touch the flat surface. The car will be inspected for legal wheels and lubricants. You will have an opportunity to make any adjustments to your car at this time. Please bring tools and patience.
Once your car passes all of the requirements it will be registered with a number for racing. ALL CARS WILL BE LEFT AT RACE SITE ONCE REGISTERED!

Q: Why do cars get left at site?
A: Cars are left to insure no modifications are done after check in.

Q: If I can not make  registration can I just register my car the day of the race?
A: No cars will be registered the day of the race. Please find a friend to bring your car if you wish it to race but can not be there to register. However, note if your car needs modifications to pass check in your car will be at the mercy of your friend to do this on your behalf. With the number of scouts, siblings and adult racers and the time it takes to check each car and make modifications we just can not allot for the time needed on race day for late entrants.

Q: Who will be voting on "Best in Show"?
A: Scouts do the voting.

Q: Can I drop my scout off and come back when the races are over? Sounds like it will be awhile.
A: Tigers must have an adult with them. Leaders are not responsible for your child at this pack family event. They will be there to encourage all of the boys and watch over the pack. Please remember leaders are parents too, they are there to share in this family event with their scout too. If you must send your scout with a friend or leave and return be sure your scout knows who he is with. Remember this is a Family event.

Q: What does my scout wear?
A: We always encourage Class A uniform at Pack Events. However we do have wonderful pack shirts (claus B) and those would be okay too.

Q: how long is this going to take? can other family members come?
A: We always encourage family and friends to come and join in our events! Be prepared, this does take some time, depending on how many cars are racing and how many volunteers are helping. Tigers will race first and so on. Awards are handed out at the end of the races once everything is totaled up. It is an opportunity for young scouts to root on the older scouts and vice versa. You are not required to stay for the entire event, however awards will not be handed out until the last race is tallied. If you leave your scout will recieve his award at the next months pack meeting. Plan to be at the races for 2 hours.

Q: Will there be concessions?
A: Yes, we usually have concessions. HOWEVER  this is a volunteer position. If no one volunteers to head up concessions ( cook, set up, clean up) and no one volunteers to help in that spot then we will not be able to provide this .

Q:Speaking of volunteers, How can I help with this event?
A: This is the most important question of all! Pinewood derby has several places you can volunteer to help. All of them must be filled in order for us t have this event and to ensure we run fair races. If you are willing to help for an hour or more during race day please contact us so we can sign you up. Note for the year of 2017 it is imperative we get volunteers to come learn the more important positions , such as check in car registration, timing and tallying. Without these positions the race will not happen.

Derby Car Rules and Guidelines

Check-In/Inspection

Each car will be measured to make sure it will fit on the track and not interfere with other racer’s cars.  We will check that all four wheels touch the track.  It will be weighed to make sure that the car does not exceed 5 ounces.  It may be measured to the 100th of an ounce so your car may weigh 5.00 ounces.

Paint must be dry prior to check-in.

The Car must be built during the current Scout year.  (You cannot reuse a car from a past Pinewood Derby).

The Race Master wants everyone to race and have a good time.  If a Scout’s car does not pass inspection, it is up to the Race Master to determine the eligibility for the car to race.  If a car that does not meet BSA Pinewood Derby regulation places in speed during the Pack race, I will not be eligible to continue to the Council race.   What this means, the Race Master may allow you to race with the pack, but you may not move on to the council race.

If a car places in speed or show, it may compete in the district Pinewood Derby held at the Gwinnett County Fairground the morning of the Scout Expo.  A total of 12 Scouts can continue to the Sweetwater Council race.  6 Tigers and 6 Cub Scouts (Wolf, Bear and Webelos).  Of the six in each group, 3 are for show and 3 are for speed.  A 1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be given in each category.

Cub Scouts and Tigers

SIZE:

Weight: 5oz or less; Length: 7”; Width: 2 ¾” (this is basically the total width of a car with wheels attached); Width between wheels: 1 ¾” (this is the exact width of the block out of the package); Bottom clearance between car and track: 3/8”.  Height: it must fit under the race timer.  Some races limit to about 3” but our race timer is taller than that)

WHEELS:

Only BSA approved wheels can be used.  (These are the same wheels that come in the box).  When you car is complete, all four wheels must touch the track.  Only dry lubricant can be used i.e. Graphite.  It can be purchased anywhere that sells Derby kits (Hobby Lobby, some Ace Hardware’s, The Scout Store) or at the key counter of a hardware store.

Each wheel must lie flat against track.  They cannot be angled so that only the edge of a tire touches the track.  Bearings cannot be used.  Use the axle slots that are already placed on the block.  Wheel/Axle placement cannot be moved.

WEIGHT:

5 ounces.  You want your car to weigh 5 ounces, or as close to it as possible.  If you use only the block of wood, the wheels and axles, your car will weigh less than 5 ounces.  You will want to add weight of any kind.  You can purchase weights where ever Derby supplies are sold or just use nuts, bolts, nails, screws, fishing weight or anything else you have lying around in your junk drawer.  I prefer to be cheap and use whatever I can find in the myriad of hardware junk I have amassed over the years.

Be careful if adding weight to the bottom of the car.  If you do, it must be recessed within the body of the car so I meets track clearance requirement of 3/8”.

NO:

Springs, motors, propellant or anything that causes the car to move other than the help of gravity.

Loose objects:  All details and decorations must remain fixed and immovable.  If a part falls off during the race, there will be no repair unless it affects the ability of the car to race.

Siblings (up to 11?)

Follow same rules as Cub Scouts.  If a sibling wants to not follow Cub Scout requirements, they can choose to race with adults

Adults, and older siblings

NO RULES, almost.  A car must not interfere with another car during the race.  No motors or springs to assist the car.  It almost must fit under the stop timer at the finish line.

For the adult race, you can make a truck with a trailer if you want to as long as it is not too tall, too wide or self-propelled.

Pinewood Derby Rules & Competition

Ground Rules & Competition

1. The race is open to all Cub Scouts registered in this Pack. Siblings, leaders, and parents may also enter in a separate division.

2. Each scout may enter only one car in the competition. Several cars may be constructed but only one may be registered and raced.

3. The car must have been built during the current year (the school year in which the Derby is held). Cars that have competed in a previous Derby are not permitted.  (If a Scout enters a car that was raced in a previous year, the car may be allowed to race with the Pack but will not qualify at the District level.  This does not apply to siblings, parents, and leaders).

4. Competition will consist of a full track of cars for each race.  (We have a three lane track.)  The competition committee will determine how to race the cars in the fairest manner possible to determine the fastest cars.

5. If a car jumps the track, the race will be run again.  Races will also be run again for technical difficulties.

6. If a car leaves its lane and interferes with another car, the race will be run again.

7. If a car becomes damaged and can be repaired in a reasonable amount of time (a few minutes), the race will be run again.

8. Only race officials may enter the track area. This rule will be strictly enforced. Please help to keep the boys and siblings inside the marked areas.

Pinewood Derby Race Rules for Pack 502

Below are the rules governing Pinewood Derby Races for Pack 502. They are intended to provide a balance between fairness and a competitive spirit. They closely resemble the rules provided by The NEGA BSA (practically copied word-for-word) to ensure that winning racers
will qualify for the Sweetwater District Pinewood Derby held at Scoutblast in April.

Pack 502 will have a total of 12 winners eligible for the Sweetwater District Pinewood Derby as follows:

1st, 2nd, and 3rd for Speed and for Show among Webelos, Bears, and Wolves and 1 st, 2nd, and 3rd for Speed and Show among Tigers.

Rules:

1. Have fun.

2. The car must be Cub Scout made, but adults are encouraged to     actively participate with their Cub Scout.

3. The car must have been built in the current scout year. Cars made in previous years may not be raced.

4. The car must be made from the official BSA Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Kit (#17006) using official BSA parts.

5. The axle slots cannot be moved from the original locations and the official BSA wheels must be attached in those slots with the nails from the original kit.

6. Wheels may be sanded to remove ridges, but may not be tapered. ALL FOUR WHEELS MUST TOUCH THE TRACK. If only three wheels touch the track, this provides an unfair advantage, and cannot be permitted.
NO WHEEL MODIFICATIONS WILL BE ALLOWED: i.e.:
“THINNING, TAPERING, HOLES, SHAVING, ETC” except as expressly stated to remove mold flashing. “LATHE TYPE” TURNING OF WHEELS IS NOT ALLOWED". All detail marks must remain visible on entire wheel.

7. No wheel bearings, bushings, or washers of any type may be used.

8. The maximum weight of the car may not exceed 5 ounces (or 141.75 grams). Scales will be available at registration so final adjustments can be made. The scale used at registration will be the official scale.

9. Dimensions for the finished car are as follows:
Width cannot exceed 2 3/4 inches (including wheels and axles).
Length cannot exceed 7 inches.

Ground clearance must be at least 3/8 inches.
Height cannot exceed 3 inches, to clear the timing device.
*Minimum width of car where the axles are inserted into the body must be 1 3/4 inches.

YOU ARE ADVISED TO NOT PUT WEIGHTS ON THE BOTTOM SIDE OF THE CAR. The cars must be able to clear the lane guides.

10. All cars will be weighed and measured at registration and must pass inspection in order to race.

11. The Volunteer Chairman in charge of the event will have the final authority to determine eligibility to race.

12. Added accessories such as windshields, driver, etc. are permitted from any source and may be used as long as width, length, and weight restrictions are met. Accessories must be permanently attached. No loose material of any kind (such as lead shot) is allowed in or on
cars.

13. Hubcaps or any other material may not be installed on the wheels in such a way as to hold the dry lubricant against the axle.

14. The car may not have any type of springs or any type of self-propelling or starting devices.
This includes solid rocket fuel boosters, bottle rockets, and slingshots.

15. Cars must belong to a currently registered Cub Scout.

16. If during the race, a car leaves the track, runs out of its lane, interferes with another car, loses an axle, etc, the heat will be rerun. If the same car gets into trouble on the second run, the contestant loses that race. Lubrication of any type may not be applied after the car is
registered, this includes during repairs.

17. Cars with wet paint will not be accepted at registration.

18. Only dry powdered lubricant will be used.

19. Participants are responsible for providing any tools or materials to make any adjustments before or during the race

Sibling Race Rules:
All Pack Rules for Pinewood Derby Races for Pack 502 apply to sibling races. Siblings will be awarded on speed.

Adult Race Rules:

Cars must be built from the official B.S.A. car kit. The pack sells these annually, please purchase from the pack as it is a small fundraiser for the pack.

Cars must use the block of wood from that kit, the wheels and axles.

There are NO weight or height limits! This is all out FUN for the adults.

Remember we are scouts and need to show fair play and respect when races are occurring....Gloating, bragging, razzing and such "adult" behaviors need to be done in fun. We will be setting an example in front of the boys...so keep it clean and friendly!
