Frequently Asked Questions

What are the requirements to join Cub Scouts?
  • Wolf Cubs age 8
  • Bear Cubs age 9
  • Webelos Scouts age 10
What does Cub Scouting offer my son?
Cub Scouting offers fun and challenging activities that promote character development and physical fitness. Service projects, ceremonies, games, and other activities guide boys through the core values and give them a sense of personal achievement. Through positive peer group interaction and parental guidance, boys also learn honesty, bravery, and respect.
How does participation in Cub Scouting affect participation other activities?
The Cub Scout program is designed to complement many other extracurricular activities. Boys who participate in organized sports such as soccer, baseball, basketball, swimming, gymnastics, etc., or academic-based extracurricular activities such as music, art, science, etc. can be recognized for these activities through Cub Scout belt loops and pins which are worn on their uniform.
What are the responsibilities of a parent?
• Provide help and support for the den and pack.
• Work with your son on advancement projects and activities.
• Attend pack meetings with your son and present his advancement awards to him at the pack meeting.
• Attend and assist with den & pack outings.

Where do I get a scout book?
The Church provides one manual per boy when he enters a new den. If the book is lost, stolen, destroyed, etc., it is the responsibility of the parents to replace it. A replacement can be bought from the Boy Scout Shop in Tumwater or Tacoma. Click "Store Locations" in the left-hand column for more information.
How does rank advancement work?
Regardless of how old a boy is when he first starts Cub Scouts, his first rank to work toward is Bobcat, which is basically an overview of the program, and can easily to completed with adult help in a week. (This rank is not usually worked on in den or pack meetings and must be completed with a parent.)

An eight-year-old will be placed in the wolf den, a nine-year-old will be placed in the bear den, and a ten-year-old will be placed in the Webelos den, regardless of whether any Scouting has been completed before. With the exception of Bobcat, no rank is required as a prerequisite to any other rank in Cub Scouts.

Once a boy has a birthday, he will be placed in a new den. If he has not completed the rank requirements for the den he just aged out of by his birthday, he cannot earn the rank.

Some rank requirements are completed in den and pack meetings, but not all. Boys will not be able to earn their ranks without support from their parents and working at home. Den leaders do their best to keep track of which boys have completed which requirements. Parents are asked to mark which requirements their boys have completed in the back of their son's book and notify den leaders of any progress made.
My son has a non-member friend who wants to join Cub Scouts. Can he join this pack?
Yes. Just remember that LDS packs advance by age rather than by grade the way non-LDS packs do, so your son and his friend may not necessarily be in the same den all the time.
Can my son bring a friend to pack and den meetings?
Absolutely.
Can my non-Cub Scout children participate in Pack activities?
Usually, yes. However, please keep in mind that Pack activities are specifically for the Cub Scouts, so Cubs will always get priority where applicable. In addition, parents are asked to keep an eye on their children, as Den Leaders are not responsible for non-Cub Scout children.
